Duration of the Programme

The Basic Nursing Programme at the School of Nursing, Amachara is a three-year full-time training designed to equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to become professional nurses.

The programme is divided into three academic sessions, Year One, Year Two, and Year Three, each carefully structured to blend classroom instruction with clinical practice in accredited hospitals and health facilities.

  • First Year (100 Level):
In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of nursing, basic human anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and general nursing principles. They also learn the fundamentals of patient care, ethics, and hospital procedures. This stage helps students build a strong theoretical background and understand the core duties of a nurse.
  • Second Year (200 Level):
During the second year, the training becomes more practical and hospital-based. Students are posted to wards and different hospital departments to gain hands-on experience under supervision. They learn about medical-surgical nursing, maternal and child health, community health nursing, and pharmacology. This year focuses on applying classroom knowledge to real-life patient care situations.
  • Third Year (300 Level):
The final year of the programme focuses on advanced nursing care, leadership, and management in nursing practice. Students are expected to demonstrate competence in patient assessment, decision-making, and emergency response. They also undergo an intensive clinical posting and revision period to prepare for the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) qualifying examinations.

At the end of the three-year training, students who pass all required courses, clinical assessments, and the final qualifying examination are awarded the Registered Nurse (RN) certificate by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).

This certification qualifies graduates to work as professional nurses in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare centers across Nigeria — and even abroad after license verification.
